The Lost Island is a large-scale education project by Tŷ Cerdd (Music Centre Wales) with John Hardy. The project is based around music specially composed by John as a construction kit for composition and performance for young people to enjoy.

"The Lost Island begins with a story. Except nobody gives you the story – you have to think it up for yourself..."

The project involves four Monmouthshire schools who will meet and perform their compositions of the three tribes living in different terrains on the island - the coast, the forest and the great plain. The schools taking part will be Deri View Primary, Llantilio Pertholey Church in Wales Primary, Monmouth School and Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls.

The performance involves diverse elements like pre-recorded tracks, live playing - including 40 violins and cello at one point - dancing, chanting, costumes and scenery. It will take place at the Wales Millennium Centre foyer on Monday 10 November 2008 at 1pm.

Read more about the project in the construction kit PDF guide.

“The children in the schools have responded amazingly well to the ideas behind the piece, making wonderfully insightful comments about how societies, cultures and religions operate... Several schools have already put their names down for the project next year, but once we’ve finished this pilot I’ll start to take the project into more groups of schools...”
