'Cardiff’s Soundtrack festival looks at the relationship between film and music. Two new films, Abraham’s Point and Cwcw, both of which include the music of composer John Hardy, will be shown there this week.

Cwcw has already won a prize for Best International Feature Film at the South Africa film festival. Director Delyth Jones says that music is important in every film but in this one in particular.

“Cwcw plays with different realities and so with different genres,” said Delyth, “and the music needs to respond to these different genres at different times in the film.”

It is the process of responding to scenes and characters which inspires John Hardy, who composed the music for the film Hedd Wyn. “The characters change throughout the film and the music helps the audience to understand what’s happening at different times,” he said.

Where would any film be without music?

“A film needs music,” said John. “Where would a film be without music? Nowhere!”'

'Mae gŵyl ffilm Soundtrack yng Nghaerdydd yn edrych ar y berthynas rhwng cerddoriaeth a ffilm. Bydd dwy ffilm newydd, sy’n cynnwys cerddoriaeth y cyfansoddwr John Hardy, Abraham’s Point a Cwcw, yn cael eu dangos yno.

Mae Cwcw eisioes wedi enill gwobr yng Nghŵyl Ffilmiau Ryngwladol De Affrica. Mae Delyth Jones, cyfarwyddwr y ffilm, yn dweud fod cerddoriaeth yn hanfodol ymhob ffilm ond yn yr un yma’n arbennig.

“Mae Cwcw yn chwarae gyda realities gwahanol ac felly gyda genres gwahanol,” meddai. “Mae’r gerddoriaeth yn ymateb i’r genres gwahanol.”

I John Hardy, sydd hefyd wedi ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth ar gyfer y ffilm Hedd Wyn, mae’r broses o ymateb i olygfeydd a chymeriadau mewn ffilm yn ei ysbrydoli.

“Mae’r cymeriadau yn newid drwy’r ffilm a mae’r gerddoriaeth yn helpu’r gynulleidfa i weld beth sy’n mynd ymlaen ar gyfnodau arbennig,” meddai.

A lle fyddai ffilm heb gerddoriaeth?

“Mae ffilm angen cerddoriaeth,” meddai John. “Lle fyddai ffilm heb gerddoriaeth? Nunlle!”'
